Eagles Champions!!!!

Well, we did it! The Oroville Eagles PeeWee football team is now officially the champions of the American Association of Youth Football and Cheer League!

Saturday, Deb and I, along with my parents and my friend Andy, hopped in the car and drove to Rio Linda for the AAYFC championship game. Man, what a nail-biter! It looked like it was going to be easy, as we went into half-time with a 14-0 lead. But, in the second half, the Foothill Wolfpack started playing a serious passing game. They put six points on the board, but were unable to capitalize on the point after.

Then, they made another touchdown. This time, they tried to kick the point after, which would have tied the score (in PeeWee football they give two points for kicking the point after, and only one for running it in). Once again, the Eagles defense was there and prevented the kick.

On the last drive of the game, Foothill had the ball. With only four seconds on the clock, and less than eight yards to go for a touchdown, the Wolfpack tried a run around the left end. Boy, it sure looked like they were going to make it when, from out of nowhere, Daniel Thomas, one of our toughest tacklers was standing just in front of the goal line. I wasn't sure if I should take heart or not, but I knew that if anyone could stop the play, it was Daniel. And, danged if he didn't wrap the kid up and drop him just inches from the goal. I mean, the kids shoulder took out the pilon at the goal line, but the ball never broke the plane. So, the game was over, the score was 14-12, and the Oroville Eagles Peewees are the 2006 champions!

And, not only was it a great game, but we were impressed by the support of the Oroville parents. Even parents of boys from other Eagles teams were there to show their support, as well as at least two groups of Eagles cheerleaders.

Deb and I are really proud of our grandson, who played every offensive play, as center; and played quite a bit on the defensive team, as well. And, we are quite proud of our son, whose leadership as President of the Oroville Leaders has made this an exceptionally good year for the organization.
